There are cities in the world where eating is not simply a necessity, it is a love language. Beirut is one of them. And since 1981, when Marouf and Houda Abouzaki opened the first Maroush on Edgware Road, Londoners have had their own corner of that world. For over 40 years, we have carried one purpose: to bring the authentic Beirut restaurant experience to London, plate by plate, table by table.
What Beirut’s Food Culture Feels Like
Imagine a city where the table is never a solo act. In Beirut, meals are long, loud, and full of laughter. Dishes appear in waves; no one rushes, no one eats alone. The food itself is an act of generosity: a statement that says you are welcome here.
Lebanese food culture is built on abundance. A spread of mezze is not a starter; it is an invitation to slow down, share, and connect. The freshness is striking. Herbs cut that morning. Lemons are squeezed to order. Bread still warm from the oven. It is a cuisine that asks nothing of you except that you enjoy it.
The Markets, the Mezze, the Grill
Walk through a Beirut market, and you understand immediately why Lebanese food, London visitors so often describe as the most vivid they have ever tasted. The colours alone, crimson sumac, golden turmeric, deep green za’atar, the vivid purple of fresh aubergine, tell you everything about the care that goes into Lebanese cooking.
The mezze table is where it all begins:
- Hummus made smooth with the best tahini and a generous pour of olive oil
- Tabbouleh so fresh and herb-forward it barely resembles what many know by the name
- Moutabal with its smoky, silky depth
- Kibbeh seasoned lamb and bulgur shaped with generations of practice
- Falafel golden outside, vibrantly green within
Then comes the grill. In Beirut, charcoal smoke drifts through entire neighbourhoods in the early evening. At Maroush, that same ritual plays out nightly: lamb shawarma turning slowly on the spit, chicken taouk marinated in garlic and lemon, mixed grills arriving at the table in that glorious, aromatic cloud.

How Maroush Recreates It
When Marouf Abouzaki arrived in London from Lebanon, his vision was clear: not a version of Lebanese food, not an approximation of the real thing. As the family behind Maroush since 1981, that commitment has never wavered.
Every day, our kitchens receive fresh produce. Mezze is prepared daily, not in advance. Our recipes have not been simplified for a Western palate; they have been kept as they were, because that is the whole point.
The Hospitality
Lebanese hospitality is not a policy. It is a reflex. Ahlan wa sahlan, you are welcome, you are among family. The table is always big enough for one more. Your glass will not stay empty. And when someone tells you the food was wonderful, the response is not pride, it is simply: of course, you deserve it.
This is the spirit you feel the moment you walk through any of our Maroush restaurant doors. Our team are not servers in the transactional sense, they are hosts. Many of our guests have been coming for decades. Some bring their children to the same tables their parents brought them to.
