Raqs Sharqi
 |
 |
Raqs Sharqi means 'dance from the East', and has its roots in Middle Eastern fertility ceremonies - a dance performed by women for women.
Today, 'belly dancing' is enjoying a renewed popularity in the West, and has even been performed by pop artist Shakira (who claims Lebanese heritage) in her live performances and videos.
Arabic dance is characterized by intricate hip movements, and incorporates many techniques from many different parts of the Middle East. Each country has its own, unique style.
Stylistically, Lebanese belly dancing sits somewhere between the subdued Egyptian and more flamboyant Turkish performances. It is a dramatic, elegant style with many poses, direction changes, and balletic influences.
Uniquely designed for the female body, Raqs Sharqi in all Middle Eastern cultures is an expression of inner awareness. And unlike ballet, which demands certain physical aesthetics, one can be any age, shape or size for Raqs Sharqi.
